Pressotherapy and Pregnancy – Safety, Benefits, and Precautions

Pregnancy is a special time, but it often brings physical discomfort, such as fluid retention, heavy legs, and varicose veins. Pressotherapy offers a safe and effective way to relieve these symptoms. However, there are important precautions to take, such as avoiding specific accessories like the trouser cuff and belly cuff. In this article, you'll discover all about the benefits, safety, and usage tips of pressotherapy during pregnancy.

What is pressotherapy?

Pressotherapy, also known as mechanical lymphatic drainage, uses cuffs that create pressure waves. This technique stimulates blood and lymph circulation, which helps reduce swelling and relieve discomfort.

Benefits of pressotherapy during pregnancy

  1. Reduction of fluid retention (edema)
    • During pregnancy, fluid retention is a common problem, resulting in swollen legs, ankles, and feet. Pressotherapy stimulates the drainage of excess fluid through lymphatic circulation, which can reduce swelling.
  2. Relief from heavy and tired legs
    • The extra pressure on the legs during pregnancy can lead to discomfort. Pressotherapy can help reduce this tension by improving blood circulation.
  3. Support for varicose veins
    • Pregnancy increases the risk of varicose veins due to increased pressure on the veins. Pressotherapy reduces this pressure and promotes better circulation. Want to know how pressotherapy helps relieve varicose veins? Read our article: Pressotherapy for varicose veins.
  4. Relaxation and stress reduction
    • The gentle, rhythmic pressure waves of pressotherapy not only provide physical relief but also create a moment of relaxation, which can reduce stress during pregnancy.

Safety and Precautions

Although pressotherapy during pregnancy can be safe, it is important to follow some key guidelines:

  1. Consult with your doctor:
    • Before starting pressotherapy, it's essential to consult your doctor or gynecologist. Caution is especially advised if you're experiencing pregnancy complications.
  2. Use leg cuffs only:
    • The trouser cuff and abdominal cuff should not be used during pregnancy. These accessories can put pressure on the abdomen and pelvis, which can be unsafe. Only use the leg cuffs to treat swelling in the legs.
  3. Adjust the pressure:
    • During pregnancy, a low pressure setting is most comfortable and safe. Excessive pressure should be avoided.
  4. Watch out for complications:
    • Are you experiencing pregnancy complications such as hypertension or placental problems? Pressotherapy is not recommended in such cases.

How does pressotherapy work during pregnancy?

Pressotherapy is performed using leg cuffs that create pressure waves from the feet to the thighs. These waves stimulate lymphatic and blood circulation. A session lasts an average of 20-30 minutes and can be repeated regularly, depending on the symptoms.

Using a Pressotherapy system

The system of Nymph It consists of a pump and one or more cuffs; these are easy to use, safe, and effective. It is important that you follow the instructions given to you by your nurse, therapist, or doctor.

Before using the system, you must remove compression bandages or stockings. Ensure you are sitting in a comfortable position; if necessary, place a cylindrical cotton bandage or knitted stocking on the affected limb. Place the cuff on the limb to be treated and connect the cuff to the pump.

Adjust the pump settings to the desired program, then turn on the pump.

The cuff will alternately inflate and deflate, providing a gentle massage. This stimulates blood and lymph flow in your affected limb. If the pressure is too high and you experience discomfort, you can reduce the pressure setting on the pump. This can even be done during an ongoing therapy session.

It is important that you follow the instructions you receive regarding the duration and frequency of use.

After completing the therapy, the cuff and any cotton bandage must be removed. If you are wearing compression garments, you may put them back on. However, if you become short of breath or your limb becomes swollen or painful, or if the skin becomes red and inflamed during the treatment, you must stop immediately and inform your treating physician as soon as possible.
